Heavy Melting Steel 1 & 2: A Guide For Understanding

In numerous industrial processes, heavy steel is a go-to material. Of course, most places will need something like steel rebar or steel sheeting to complete manufacturing processes, but many also rely on something known as heavy melting steel (HMS). HMS is broken down typically into two different types: type 1 and type 2. If you are just getting started with educating yourself about industrial steel materials and how they are used, it is highly important to get to know both of these. Take a look at some of the most commonly asked questions regarding HMS 1 and HMS 2 materials.

What is the difference between HMS 1 and HMS 2?

In general terms, HMS 1 doesn't contain any pieces of galvanized steel or blackened steel, but HMS 2 generally does. Most places do break down HMS 1 and HMS 2 according to the size of the pieces as well. For example, you may find HMS 2 with all pieces in the batch having to be smaller than 60 inches by 18 inches. There can also be minimum steel thicknesses in every batch that are decided by the provider.

Where does HMS come from?

HMS is widely traded and heavily sought after, but it is readily available. The pieces come from scrap, most often pieces of steel or iron that have been brought in after a demolition project. However, many steel manufacturers also recycle their scrap pieces or sell off their scrap pieces as well.

What are HMS materials used for the most in industrial operations?

HMS materials are most often used to create other steel products. If you are looking to keep production costs low, it is best to go with scrap steel pieces in HMS form because this material is far cheaper than regular steel pieces that have already been formed by a manufacturer.

How do you find a good HMS material supplier?

Most scrap metal places do provide HMS 1 and 2, but it is oftentimes better to work specifically with a steel distributor who specializes in all forms of steel, including HMS. You will be able to better rely on the quality of the materials you are getting if they come from a place that is knowledgeable about steel in general. Additionally, these places are more likely to be able to supply you with specific HMS 1 and HMS 2 formulations so you can best achieve your own products with the materials.
